If you have ever taken the time to read through my Thoughts&Things blog on this website, there are a handful of quotes printed on these light bulbs that might sound familiar. The idea behind this still life series is pretty straightforward: ideas written on light bulbs. More specifically, the thoughts that creep into your head late at night when you're trying to fall asleep. These are all thoughts that I have had, many of which are documented here on this website. However, simply documenting them didn't seem like enough. I wanted to make them visual, to make them visible. So here they are, late night thoughts scribbled on burnt out light bulbs. Thoughts that never became anything but thoughts... until now.
When I started this series I didn't think there would be much interest. Who would feel comfortable enough to strip down to barely nothing and let me take pictures of them? It turns out, the response I got was amazing. Everyone was so excited to jump in and be a part of this project. For me, that's what really gave this series an impact. It shows how, to some level or degree, we all are affected by negative body image, but there is no one standard of beauty. These women are all beautiful. Working in the lighting lab on campus was a lot of fun and I was really happy with how the images turned out, after taking an obscene amount of "professional selfies" of course. These are the two images that I chose for my in class critique. |
