Human Touch
I layed, eyes closed,
Upon an ugly, orange chair.
Later that night,
The chair would burn,
As old furniture has
A tendencey to do
In the state of
Wisconsin.
Then, it would be
Replaced by a desk,
Not nearly as sturdy.
I felt bad.
It was a good chair,
Though I had never
Truly known it.
But for years it held
My clothes,
My notebooks,
Those things that I
Was much too lazy
To properly put away.
"For years I've waited
For you to lay here."
The chair spoke softly.
"For years all I've wanted
Was to do the one job
I was designated
So long ago."
A fly brushed up against my leg,
Trailing along skin
Not quite tan.
He had friends -- or family --
Who joined him, choosing
Out of all of the surfaces
To dance upon,
My weary flesh.
Kind of like the cat,
Settled into my lap,
Purring, always purring.
Or the dog
Fallen to rest
Across my feet,
Smiling, always smiling.
Kind of like your arms
Wrapped around me,
Warm, always warm,
Comforting when I need you,
Always a harbor from the storm.
And I wonder if we don't all need,
That human touch,
After all.
Upon an ugly, orange chair.
Later that night,
The chair would burn,
As old furniture has
A tendencey to do
In the state of
Wisconsin.
Then, it would be
Replaced by a desk,
Not nearly as sturdy.
